Here is the radio script: (see bottom of page)

About: Due do Henry Ford's method of mass production and the development of the electric powered car, automobile making became more efficient, allowing for more cars to be made. Between 1920 and 1929 alone, the production of motor vehicles increased from 2.2 million to 5.3 million ("Automobile and the Environment "). As years passed, models of cars improved, wages increased, and the price of vehicles decreased. Therefore, more people could afford cars, and due to technological advancements, the car became easier to drive. The most popular car was the Ford Model-T, while the most expensive was the Rolls-Royce. The cars in the early 20s were convertibles (similar to the cars mentioned in The Great Gatsby), and usually contained seats for up to three passengers. Cars also became more appealing for women, as colors and designs changed ("1920s Automobiles").

Radio broadcasting began in 1920. In the beginning, few people heard the broadcasts due to the shortage of radio receivers at the time. Between 1923 and 1930, 60 percent of American families purchased radios ("Radio in the 1920s"). Americans enjoyed listening to the radio for entertainment and news broadcasts. Advertising through radio did not appear until the late 1920s.

Reflection/Reference: Cars play a big part in the storyline of The Great Gatsby. The types and colors of cars the characters owned were parallel to their personalities and characteristics. I was interested in the role of transportation and automobiles during the 1920s. Since I knew many people migrated or worked in the city in this decade, transportation and commuting had to of importance. After a little bit of research, it turns out that driving and cars increased much in popularity during this time period. This fact also inspired the theme of this website, along with the character George Wilson's garage. Another technology that became more used was the radio, therefore I chose to make a radio broadcast podcast. Improvements of technology were crucial in the 20s as people became more modern and urbanized. In the podcast, four types of cars a being auctioned off: the coupé, Rolls-Royce, Dodge (the cars owned by Tom, Gatsby, and Nick), and the Ford Model - T, the most popular car in America.
